Hi, and thank you for visiting my blog!
My name is Craig, I’m 32 years old and I’m from (The) Wirral, UK but have mainly being living in Manchester for the past 6 years.
In December 2014 I put work on hold for a while for a while to carefully and calmly have a mid-life crisis……no, I mean do some travelling.
What/Who is this site for?
Erm…..well, the honest answer is I’m not entirely sure.
The main purpose was to have some way of keeping friends and family up to date with where I am and what I’ve been up to. However, I’ve spent the large part of my working life to date in the software/digital industry and so it felt difficult to put together and write a website/blog which isn’t designed to be viewed by strangers.
So please bear with me for a while why I figure this out. If it looks like an ‘in joke’ and you don’t know me yet…..just ignore it. If you do know me but don’t find it funny…..also ignore it!
Whats with the name ‘White Belt Abroad’?
– The rank of a beginner
I’ve tried a lot of different martial arts over the years, dipping in and out of Karate, Judo, Kung Fu from around 6 years old up until my early twenties. After a considerable lull, I decided to pick it back up and my latest martial arts addiction has been Brazilian Jui Jitsu (BJJ) for the past 15 months.
As a part of my travelling experience, I really want to try and make an effort to keep up as much training and excercise as possible, so my plan is to try and get in touch with local BJJ and mixed martial gyms (MMA) in as many of the towns and cities I’m travelling to as possible. Apart from trying to stay in shape, I think it will also be a good way to get to meet people and learn about the area. As a (non-BJJ) friend of mine told me when I was talking about this idea, “Sounds good, I guess you don’t really know a culture until you’ve been choked by it”
But that’s not the all of it.
The ‘white belt’ also applies to a lot of other areas about this trip and about me in general……Travelling around the world for 12 months, writing a blog, trying to learn a 2nd language, skipping (I’ll get to that another time), trying to fill my day to day time without the structure of employment……I’m a white belt in all of this too!
Hopefully, as the year goes on I can put a stripe or two on my white belt for all of these other areas…..and maybe pick up a few more new white belts for things which I havn’t even considered yet!
